Project Meadowlark is a major new, fully integrated domestic fertilizer complex in Gothenburg, Nebraska, representing more than $1 billion in total project investment.
Every pound of ammonia produced is converted on-site into ready-to-use products for our farmers and truckers. Once it reaches commercial operation by 2029, the complex will produce:
● 365,000 tons of Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer per year.
● 140,000 tons of Ammonium Thiosulfate (ATS) fertilizer per year.
● 52,000 tons of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) per year.
Nebraska is an agricultural powerhouse, with farm cash receipts approaching $40 billion annually. The crops grown, herds raised, and products made here are more than a staple of Nebraska’s economy–they are essential to the American food supply.
The Challenge: Nebraska’s need for nitrogen fertilizer far outpaces local production. In fact, most liquid fertilizer or its components used in the United States are imported from foreign markets. This leaves our farmers vulnerable to supply chain shifts and geopolitical disruptions thousands of miles away. And when these markets fluctuate, Nebraska’s farmers and American consumers pay the price.
The Solution: Project Meadowlark provides Nebraska’s farmers a reliable, homegrown supply of liquid fertilizer, ensuring Nebraska’s farmers remain competitive and America’s food supply remains secure.
We are moving with the urgency Nebraska’s farmers deserve, while maintaining the engineering rigor and safety standards required for a facility of this scale.
● Timeline: Civil work is on track to begin in 2027, with commercial operations by 2029
● Site Secured: The location has been granted by the city of Gothenburg and is fully zoned and entitled.
● Contracting: The engineering, procurement, and fabrication contract has been secured.
● Permitting: The air permit has been issued.[1]
Project Meadowlark has the full support of the local community. Thanks in large part to visionary farmer-aligned partners and members of Nebraska’s farming community, the project has raised $50 million in development capital to date.
J Westling & Co. was founded by Joshua Westling, a Nebraskan with a proven track record of bringing large-scale industrial projects online. In 2018, Westling developed Fortigen, one of only three greenfield nitrogen fertilizer plants of meaningful scale built in the United States in over 30 years.

Notable event remarks from co-founder and CEO, Josh Westling:
"The excitement around this project is palpable and it is particularly rewarding to experience cooperation and support from many different sources. The Governor and the State of Nebraska, our federal, state, and local elected officials, and utility company leadership, just to name a few, have all provided support necessary for this project to become a reality."
"I don't think we chose Gothenburg. Gothenburg chose us. The energy of the community is infectious."
"We are obviously excited about our future to be part of the solutions for agriculture. There is no better place for this project than the community of Gothenburg."
"This is the kind of place you want to do business. The support has been fantastic and this celebration embodied that. Seeing everyone interested who came out to support us. The kind words. The nice gestures. We definitely appreciate everyone coming out."
